Muscovado

The stirring and powerful piece ‘Muscovado’ takes a hard look at the role of the British during slavery in Barbados at the start 19th Century. To visualise the distress and struggle withing this theme in a compelling way I used the symbol of a heart-shaped flower petal: This image combines different concepts in my eyes: the blood that flew, the hearts that burned and the hope and fight for a better new life, that arises again and again.

Having had a successful run in London during Black History Month in 2014 the production was touring several cities around the UK in 2015.
